Some things do not belong in a cloud
Recovery information, identity documents, records of your holdings, the file that would matter most if your computer died tomorrow. Put those in a cloud account and they live on someone else's servers, protected by a password and whoever else has access at the other end. The private alternative is old-fashioned and better: a physical drive, encrypted, kept where you decide.
This drive is encrypted with LUKS, the military grade full-disk encryption standard trusted across the Linux world, using AES-256. Plug it in, enter your passphrase, and it works like any other drive. Without the passphrase, the contents are unreadable. A lost or stolen drive gives up nothing.
Built for the job, marked with our name
The drive itself is a solid metal body with the FreedomTech name etched into it, because we stand behind the gear we supply. The swivel housing carries both connectors, USB-A on one end and USB-C on the other, so it plugs straight into any of our computers with no adaptor in between.
A Crypto and Privacy Computer accessory
This drive is built for Linux, so it belongs alongside our Crypto Computers and Privacy Computers, where it works out of the box. It is not suitable for Windows or Mac computers, which cannot read a LUKS drive without third-party software we do not recommend. If your backup machine is one of ours, or any Linux computer, this is the drive for it.
The backup rule worth following
One backup is a start. Two backups in two places is a plan, because it survives fire, flood and theft as well as a failed drive. This is the same encrypted drive we include with every crypto computer we build, and buying a second lets you keep one at home and one somewhere else entirely. Setup instructions come with it, you set your own passphrase, and we are on email if you get stuck.
